The Grain Valley Department of Bands offers students many musical opportunities for students of all ages. At the core of the department is a vertically aligned winds and percussion curriculum from Grade 6 through Grade 12 as well as exemplary and dedicated students. Grain Valley Bands emphasizes performance excellence through hard work, outstanding character, and utmost professionalism.
The middle school program has a current enrollment of over 360 students across two middle schools. The curriculum is carefully coordinated between each building to ensure similar musical development based on the structured semester objectives. Each middle school offers like instrument winds classes and a dedicated percussion curriculum. In addition to band class students have the opportunity to participate in Big Band, Jazz Ensemble, and solo and small ensemble festival. In addition, the 8th grade band performs on the annual Sounds of Fall concert at the high school and attends a large ensemble festival. The percussion students perform at the annual Grade 6-12 Night of Percussion Concert.
The High School program operates under the philosophy that dedication, professionalism, and attention to detail will result in the best musical experience for the musicians and audience. All musicians participate as a Marching Eagle in the fall and are then split into Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, or Percussion Orchestra. In addition to ensemble classes, students have the opportunity to take Chamber Ensemble which focuses on advanced instrument techniques through solo and small ensemble materials. Outside of school students can participate in the Eagle Jazz Ensemble, two pep bands, the pit orchestra, and Winterguard. Each year the Department of Bands hosts the MSHSAA District #15 Solo and Small Ensemble Festival and a MCCGA color guard festival.
The Grain Valley R-V SChool Distric is located near Kansas City in eastern Jackson County, Missouri. The district covers approixmately 40 square miles with a population of over 13,800 which includes a total student population of 3,759 students. The Grain Valley R-V School District is one fo the fastest growing districts in Missouri. GVSD operates one high school, an alternative high school, two middle schools, four elementary schools, an early childhood center, and a transportation center.
Grain Valley High School is a comprehensive four-year high school with approximately 1,030 student in grades nine through twelve. In 2010, 2011, and 2013 it was recognized by Newsweek and Washington Post as one of America’s Best High Schools. Students have many opportunities to not only be successful academically, but excel through extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. Students have the opportunities to challenge themselves academically through the Advanced Placement program through the College Board. In 2013, Grain Valley High School was named to the 2nd annual Advanced Placement Honor Roll for expanding opportunity and improving performance for AP students.
